What is FIRST?
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a global non-profit organization founded by Dean Kamen in 1989. Its mission is to prepare young people for the future through a suite of inclusive, team-based robotics programs for ages 4-18.
Beyond building machines, FIRST emphasizes core values such as Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition, teaching students that they can compete fiercely while treating one another with respect and kindness.
The Levels of FIRST
FIRST LEGO League
(FLL)
The entry point into the FIRST progression. FLL utilizes LEGO® bricks and technology to introduce students to STEM concepts through fun, hands-on learning.
- Discover (PreK-1): playful intro to STEM.
- Explore (Grades 2-4): focuses on engineering fundamentals.
- Challenge (Grades 4-8): teams build autonomous robots to score points on a thematic playing field.
FIRST Tech Challenge
(FTC)
Teams design, build, and program robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams.
- The Robot: Roughly 18" x 18", built from reusable kits of parts and custom materials.
- The Game: Played on a 12' x 12' field in a 2 vs 2 alliance format.
- Focus: Developing technical skills, engineering innovation, and community outreach.
FIRST Robotics Competition
(FRC)
Considered the "ultimate Sport for the Mind," FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology.
- The Robot: Industrial-sized robots weighing up to ~125 lbs.
- The Game: Complex field games played by 3-team alliances.
- The Experience: Under strict rules and limited resources, students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," and build a robot.
Why Join?
FIRST participants are significantly more likely to pursue Engineering and CS majors in college. It provides access to millions of dollars in scholarships and creates a network of professionals and mentors.
